Use the steps to get to the moon

4. Rocket Construction

This exercise is to get the children to make a rocket using arts and crafts.

The aim of this exercise is to aid the development and increase awareness of the visual arts requirements as outlined in the primary curriculum.  It will help to make the children more aware of line, shapes, colour textures and materials. It will also aid development of constructions skills by using paint, card, scissors and patterns. This exercise will also highlight the importance of science in everyday life.

Instructions:

*NB: Before this exercise it is important to tell the children to collect toilet paper rolls from home and bring them in for the exercise. Teacher should also anticipate that some children may forget their rolls or “mess-up” their first attempt, so you should also have a few spares ready.

Step 1: Show examples

There are some examples of rocket constructions provided, with pictures and videos. If you have internet access may also search Youtube example: “arts and crafts rocket” and you will find numerous videos.

This is to give the children some ideas about how they may decorate their rockets and show them that there are different ways in which to decorate.

Step 2: Let’s decorate!

Start making the rockets!

Have fun and enjoy the process!

Step 3: Display

Display the rockets once they are dry for everyone to see each other’s work.

Let the children see other ideas from their classmates.
